3 Reasons Why Prayer Journals Are Useful

As a child, I remember my mother always praying, and during her prayer time, she would always have a journal with her. At the time, I had no clue why she would always have that with her.
One day, I remember looking through her prayer journal, and I found a list of names that she had written down. I remember one of the names being my father’s name, and beside his name, she had written “salvation.”
For years, my mother prayed the prayer of salvation for my father, and as a kid, I thought she was crazy. I remember saying to myself, “I don’t know why she keeps praying for him. He won’t ever get saved.” My father was a functional alcoholic, and his behavior was totally opposite of my mother’s. I felt sadness and disappointment toward my father, but nevertheless, I still loved him.
After years of my mother praying and believing God for my father’s salvation I can happily say that my father accepted Jesus Christ into his life. Sometimes we think that God doesn’t answer our prayers simply because it doesn’t happen right away. However, this taught me that despite what it looks like God will answer we just have to stay committed and have faith.
In October 2016 my father went home to be with the Lord. After the funeral I went over to my mom’s house to help clean up and while there, I went through some old things and found all of my mom’s countless prayer journals. As I started to flip through them I noticed that God had answered so many of my mother’s prayers, one of them being my father’s salvation.
While going through this time in my life, I realized that because of my mother’s prayers and unshakable faith, God answered her prayers. Her journals are a reminder that the prayers of the righteous avail much (James 5:16).
Here are three main reasons why prayer journals are necessary and beneficial in your walk with Christ:
Prayer Journals Can Help Us Remember to Pray for Others
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them” (1 Timothy 2:1 NLT). We are to not only pray for ourselves, friends and family but also for people we may not know. Praying for others takes the focus off of us and our problems and redirects us to have compassion for others.
2. Prayer Journals Help Direct Our Prayers
Writing down your prayer requests can help us be clear and direct when we go to God in prayer. We have to be strategic when we pray, making sure that we also attach the Word of God to the specific request so that we pray God’s Word. Our words may return void, but the Bible states that God’s Word “shall not return unto [God] void, but it shall accomplish that which I please” (Isaiah 55:11 KJV).
3. Prayer Journals Help Remind Us of How God Answered Our Prayers
When we are asking God to answer a prayer we should also record when he answered our prayer. Sometimes when God doesn’t answer our prayers right away, we often get discouraged or think that He has forgotten us. However, we are quick to forget how God shows up for us and cares about what concerns us. This is why we should always record when prays are answered and to continue to praise and thank God for the answered prayer.
